Bequests

A bequest is the easiest and most common type of legacy gift. It is a commitment of support made through your will without affecting your current financial situation. You simply name Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association as a beneficiary of all, or a portion of your assets when you write or update your will.

BENEFITS OF MAKING A BEQUEST:

  • Your cash resources won’t be affected now or while you need them
  • You retain full control of your assets during your lifetime
  • The beneficiary designation is revocable meaning it can be changed if your financial and/or life circumstances change
  • The final taxes to be paid on your estate may be significantly reduced, which can be a great advantage for your heirs and a comfort to you

There are different types of bequests so you can choose the one that best suits your circumstance and wishes. You can donate a specific gift amount, or contribute all or a percentage of your estate’s assets to Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association.

BEQUEST OPTIONS:

  • Residual Bequest: designates all or a percentage of what remains in your estate after all debts, taxes administrative expenses and specific bequests have been paid or distributed
  • Specific Bequest: designates a stated sum of money or specific piece of property, such as securities or real estate
  • Contingent Bequest: only takes effect if the primary intention cannot be met (e.g. if the named beneficiary does not survive the donor)

Before you draft your will, please notify CSA of your intention to make a bequest to ensure that all information is accurate. If you have already included CSA in your will, please let us know. Your intentions will be treated confidentially.

Life Insurrance

Did you know that it is possible to designate the Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association as a beneficiary of your life insurance? Doing so is a simple and realistic way for many to make a significant contribution to the cause. A small financial commitment today can make a huge difference down the road.

BENEFITS OF MAKING A GIFT OF LIFE INSURANCE:

  • A gift of life insurance does not reduce the value of your estate for your loved ones.
  • Life insurance proceeds are paid directly to CSA and are not subject to probate and estate fees.
  • The Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association will issue a charitable tax receipt for any proceeds received after death. This charitable tax receipt creates a tax credit on your final tax return, which benefits your family and other beneficiaries.

LIFE INSURANCE OPTIONS:

  • Name Canadian Spondylitis Association as the owner and beneficiary of a policy. Pay the premiums and receive a charitable income tax receipt.
  • Transfer a paid up life insurance policy to CSA by naming the organization as the irrevocable owner/beneficiary. Receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the policy upon receipt.
  • Gift an existing policy on which premiums are still being paid by transferring ownership to CSA. Receive a charitable tax receipt from CSA for all future premium payments.
  • Retain ownership of your policy and name Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association as the direct beneficiary. Your estate will receive a tax receipt for the value of the policy.

RRSP/RRIF

You can name the Canadian Spondylitis Association as the direct beneficiary of your registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) and registered retirement income funds (RRIFs) and/or pension plan. In doing so, trust assets will not be subject to probate fees as your RRSP/RRIF exists outside of the estate settlement process. This can be an advantageous way to offset taxes owing on funds at the time of death.

BENEFITS OF MAKING GIFTS OF RRSP/RRIF:

      • Your gift is treated as a charitable donation in the year of death and is eligible for a charitable tax credit on your final tax return
      • You retain full access to your retirement funds for the duration of your lifetime
      • The designation is revocable and can be changed if your financial and/or life circumstances change
      • Funds that otherwise would be lost to taxation are re-directed towards helping CSA support Canadians living with spondyloarthritis

HOW TO GIVE GIFTS OF RRSP/RRIF:

Simply name Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association as a direct beneficiary on the plan document and advise the institution holding your retirement account of the change. We encourage you to also advise the Canadian Spondyloarthritis Association of your decision, which will be held in confidence as per your wishes.

Publicly Traded Securities

It’s easy to make a gift of publicly traded securities, mutual funds or stocks. A gift of this nature offers both you and the charity immediate benefits.

BENEFITS OF MAKING A GIFT OF PUBLICLY TRADED SECURITIES:

  • Tax advantages:
    • By transferring your securities directly to Canadian Spondylitis Association, you eliminate the capital gains tax
    • You receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value of the stock upon transfer
  • Reduce taxes to your estate: If you leave publicly traded securities to CSA through your will, your taxable capital gain may be eliminated and your estate many claim a tax credit of up to 100% of your net annual income in the year of death and the year preceding
  • The spondyloarthritis community receives immediate benefits from your generosity.
